There are many reasons why an eye examination at Ray-Lewis Opticians, is different to those that you may have tried before.
1: One-hour Eye Examination – We take the time to get to know you and explain to you what we find. We can also answer any questions and address any concerns you have regarding your eyes. A one-hour eye-examination is usual for adult patients at Ray-Lewis Opticians.
2: 30 years in Optometry – The principal optometrist, Mr Pramod-Ray Patel has a wealth of experience and there isn’t much that he hasn’t seen and dealt with, in that time. In addition, all the optometrists complete many hours every year, on CET (Continuing Education and Training) to learn the latest techniques and clinical knowledge.
3: The Latest Technology – We have the latest and most advanced diagnostic equipment available. This includes the Triton 3-D OCT machine, which is the most advanced 3-D scanner of its kind. This machine not only gives us a complete 3-D view of the front and the back of the eye, but also allows us to peel back layers of the 3D images of your eye, to find early signs of abnormalities below the surface.
We also use the TRK-2P in our Pre-screening tests. This extraordinary machine carries out four essential tests in succession. An autorefractor which measures the estimated prescription. A Keratometer which measures the corneal curvature. Pachymetry which measures the corneal thickness and a Tonometer which measures the pressure of the liquid inside the eye. In a quick and irritation-free experience using this machine, we can obtain the results of these four important tests.
4: Peace of Mind – At Ray-Lewis Opticians, you get peace of mind knowing that you will be seeing a familiar optometrist with each visit, who knows the history of your eyes and what to monitor, but also knows what really matters to you, regarding your vision.
Eye Examination F.A.Q's
How much is an Eye Examination?
If you qualify for an NHS Eye Examination, then this is free of charge.
Click here to see if you are eligible – https://www.nhs.uk/nhsengland/healthcosts/pages/eyecarecosts.aspx
If you would like to upgrade from an NHS Sight Test, to a private Eye Examination, a supplementary charge of £20 will apply. The fee for a private Eye Examination is £47.50.
How long does the Eye Examination take?
An adult examination takes an hour. The examination for children takes approximately 30 minutes for the first visit and 30mins for a follow up visit, which could include the use of eye drops to allow for a more conclusive look at the back of the eyes and for a more accurate measurement of the glasses prescription.
After your examination, you will be guided by our dispensing team to advise you on your glasses, if the optometrist feels you need to upgrade your current glasses or if you need glasses for the first time. The time you spend with the dispensing staff varies depending on your individual needs.
There is free parking opposite the practice, in the Berkeley Centre for 2 hours.
From what age can my Child, begin having Eye Examinations?
There is no minimum age limit on when a child can have their eyes examined. We frequently see patients from babies all the way through to their teens. Mr Pramod-Ray Patel has worked as a Consulting Paediatric Optometrist at the Sheffield Children’s Hospital for 20 years.
Children do not need to be able to read or identify letters for us to examine their eyes. We have alternative tests that allow us to examine children.
We strongly encourage all children and young people to have their eyes tested regularly, usually every year.
What happens during my Eye Examination?
See Patient Journey page.
In a one-hour examination, you will be eligible for a Field’s Test and the TRK-2P in pre-screening tests.
Following this, you will be seen by Mr Pramod-Ray Patel for an eye examination to check your prescription for glasses using the latest in computerised phoropter technology which patients say is a comfortable and relaxing experience.
The Mr Pramod-Ray Patel will then advise whether it’s necessary to upgrade your glasses. If so, you will be guided by our dispensing staff in finding a suitable pair of glasses.
